  • SWS is not only for sociologists studying gender.

  • SWS is a vibrant community of sociologists concerned about gender equality who have academic homes in a variety of subfields ranging from Culture to Political Sociology to Race and Ethnicity.

  • SWS loves student members.

  • SWS is a welcoming organization that strives to be nonhierarchical and welcomes graduate students and seasoned professionals alike. New members are encouraged to serve on committees and become involved.

  • SWS is not only for academics. Many active SWS members work in nonacademic settings ranging from consulting agencies and think tanks to policy institutes and nonprofit organizations.

  • SWS is concerned about intersectionality.

  • SWS is an organization focused on gender in all its complexity and, as such, it concerns itself with the intersections of gender and race, class, national origin, sexual orientation, and ability. Our members are focused on issues that impact a broad spectrum of women ranging from immigration to poverty to same sex marriage.

  • SWS is not only for women!

  • SWS has many loyal, valued male members. We welcome men concerned with issues of gender equality.

If you have only been to the summer meeting,
you haven’t seen anything yet!

At the winter meeting (generally held in late January-early February), SWS conducts the majority of its business, offers a full and exciting program, and gives members a retreat-like opportunity to network, strategize, and socialize.

SWS promotes activism as well as intellectual growth and professional development. The organization provides opportunities for collective action, and seeks to support public sociology, in addition to offering excellent panels, and professional development workshops.

The low membership dues include a subscription to Gender & Society. The membership dues range from $14 - $51 depending on income, a bargain that brings with it one of the most interesting and influential journals in the discipline.

SWS will help pay for your travel to the winter meeting!

Yes, it’s true, SWS offers a cost-share program that will subsidize members’ travel to the winter meeting. The SWS contribution varies based on your income, in an effort to make it possible for graduate students, retirees, single parents, and contingent workers to afford to participate.

Sociologists for Women in Society is an international organization of social scientists -- students, faculty, practitioners, and researchers -- working together to improve the position of women within sociology and within society in general.
