Robert Futrell specializes in social movements, environmental sociology, sociology of science and technology, and sustainability. His research includes a series of articles on the U.S. white power movement with Dr. Pete Simi (Univ. Nebraska-Omaha). Futrell and Simi's forthcoming book-American Swastika: Inside the White Power Movement's Hidden Spaces of Hate-is scheduled for release in Fall 2009 by Rowman & Littlefield. Dr. Futrell also studies science, technology and sustainability issues in the southwestern United States. He is presently co-directing the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area Social Survey (LVMASS) to assess Las Vegas area residents' attitudes about ecological, economic, and social sustainability. Dr. Futrell just finished a four-year stint as co-principal investigator for the Nevada Test Site Oral History Project (with Dr. Andy Kirk [History] and Dr. Mary Palevsky [History], an $830,000 federally-funded project documenting the experiences of people affiliated with the Nevada Test Site, the continental site for the U.S. nuclear testing program - http://digital.library.unlv.edu/ntsohp/.

Dr. Futrell has published in a variety of journals including: Social Problems (2009, 2008, 2004), Sociology Compass, (2009), The Sociological Quarterly (2006), Journal of Political and Military Sociology (2006), Sociological Inquiry (2003), Science, Technology, and Human Values (2003), and the American Behavioral Scientist (2003). He teaches undergraduate, honors, and graduate level courses in Principles of Sociology, Environmental Sociology, Social Movements, Social Change, and Sociology of Sport, and Teaching Sociology. He has received several awards for teaching, most recently the 2005-2006 UNLV Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award.

Current Research Projects

U.S. White Power Mobilization
this project consists of a series of articles and a book project with Dr. Pete Simi (Univ. Nebraska-Omaha) on the mobilization and persistence of the White Power movement in the United States.

UNLV Nevada Test Site Oral History Project
a recently completed grant-funded project with Dr. Andy Kirk (UNLV History) and Dr. Mary Palevsky (UNLV Black Mountain Institute) that archives more than 340 hours of oral histories with Test Site workers, Native Americans, down-winders, and others affects by the U.S. continental site for nuclear testing. This project was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Department of Education. Click on the title for more information.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Area Social Survey
A grant-funded research project with Dr. Christie Batson and Dr. Barb Brents (UNLV) to survey the attitudes, knowledge, and desires of Las Vegas Valley residents on environmental, social, and economic sustainability. This project is funded by the UNLV Presidential Research Award and the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition.
