SocioGrad 3
The Third Annual Graduate Student Conference in Sociology
March 24, 2007

This March featured our third annual Graduate Student Conference! Our two sessions were devoted to diverse topics such as the body, roller derby, sex work, biculturalism, regional mass transit, the Minutemen of Las Vegas, and Cartesian Dualism. We had a great turnout this year and we'd like to thank not only all the students who presented, but all our faculty and graduate students who attended.

Candace Griffith organized the conference this year, and did a great job getting everyone together and creating a fabulous program. Thanks also go out to Brooke Wagner for presiding over the second session.

Thanks again to everyone who attended. We had a great turnout, and excellent discussions. Having so many students and faculty on hand to discuss one anothers work made it a fantastic day.

SocioGrad 2
The Second Annual Graduate Student Conference in Sociology
Spetember 17, 2004

Our second annual Graduate Student Conference, was by all accounts a huge success! With four sessions and sixteen scheduled presentations that covered a variety of sociological themes: gender; race; social movements and social change; culture; new technologies; and environmental issues among others, we shared our work with both fellow grad students and faculty. Many thanks to the faculty discussants for each session: Kate Hausbeck, Simon Gottschalk, Matt Wray, and Andrea Fontana.

Organized again this year by Giselle Touzard, our conference was dedicated to our fellow graduate student Bryan James, MA (1977-2004). Many thanks also to session organizers Michelle Gladman and Megan Hartzell and to Catherine Moorhead and Patty Rice for their administrative excellence.Valerie Bugni designed the cool conference poster.

Professor Robert Parker served as our Program Advisor, and Bruce Turner and Tina Winiger served as session Presiders. Of course, a big thanks from everyone to Katy Gilpatric for catering the day long event!

SocioGrad 1
The First UNLV Graduate Student Conference in Sociology
September 2003 witnessed the first annual Graduate Student Conference in Sociology. With four panels and sixteen presentations, with moderators drawn from among department faculty, the well attended event was a definite success.
Here's a note from graduate student conference organizer Giselle Touzard:
The conference went from just an idea to a project thanks to Dr. Hausbeck. She explained my idea to Dr. Smith and once he approved, we started sending letters and working on it. We had a number of committees: The session committee did the first and most important evaluation of all the abstracts. Mike Restivo and Megan Hartzell worked on trying to put the abstracts together in coherent sessions. Katie Gilpatric was responsible for making sure we had food. She was also a presider, and actually she was the first one to arrive the day of the conference. Dr. Keene and Dr. Prokos gave me a lot of advice and comments for the program, recruiting more presenters, and ideas for seating arrangements. Roger Roots, Mike, Katie, Meg Wilson, and I arranged the seats the day before the conference. Last but not least, Catherine Moorehead, Katie Gilpatric, and Meg Wilson helped with the copies of the program. Meg Wilson was also a presider.
Hope we'll have a good conference next year!
—Giselle
