Welcome Letter

Welcome to the new academic year 2009-10. The past year we managed to remain united and be very productive in the face of uncertain budgetary concerns. We are pleased to have granted two Ph. D's last year. Dr. Dana Maher will be at the college of the Redwoods in California and Dr. Troy McGinnis teaches in San Antonio, Texas. Our faculty continues to engage in a variety of interesting and cutting-edge research. Dr. Keene and myself published a new book, Death and Dying in America. Dr. Futrell, Dr. Brents, and Dr. Batson continue to work on the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area Social Survey. Dr. Bernhard and Dr. Monnat are collaborating on Multi-ethnic and Multi-racial Health in Nevada.

Our graduate students are making tremendous progress toward their degrees and continue to be very active at sociological meetings; some of them are beginning to see their work published. We have an excellent incoming group of new students and we look forward to meeting them and making them a part of our program.

It saddens all of us to say that one of our senior professors, Dr. Fred Preston, passed away unexpectedly in the spring. He was a faculty member at UNLV for 36 years, shaping the future of an incredible number of students, who dearly miss him.

In January we will welcome a new sociology professor, Robert. E. Lang, who will be the Director of the newly established Brooking Institute West, an internationally renowned research institute. Dr. Lang will be an integral part of our department and brings with him tremendous experience in the field of urban affairs and planning.

Welcome to our department! Let's have a wonderful Fall 2009!

Sincerely, Dr. Fontana
